Three Snowy Summits: Our Winter Tupper Lake Triad

Three mountains. One set of snowshoes. And a trail partner who would eventually have a patch of her own.
I took on the Tupper Lake Hiking Triad in winter with my dog beside me. The snow changed the pace of the whole challenge. Every climb asked for a little more attention, and every break was an excuse to look around.
Three peaks in winter
The hiking Triad is Mount Arab, Coney Mountain, and Goodman Mountain. Mount Arab has a fire tower. Coney opens onto a broad, rocky summit, and Goodman brings its own beautiful views. Each has a different feel, which makes the three-peak challenge fun to take one mountain at a time.
We were out there for the winter version, so I snowshoed the climbs. Snow can hide roots and rocks, and a packed trail can change from firm to slippery in a few steps. I kept my pace easy and paid attention to the conditions rather than trying to rush from one summit to the next.
The best trail partner
My dog came along for the adventure. Seeing her beneath the fire tower on a bright, snowy day is one of the moments I keep coming back to. We both completed the Triad, and my dog earned a canine patch too. I love that the challenge has a way to recognize four-legged hikers as part of the team.

Want to try it?
The official Triad page lists all three peaks and the registration links. To earn the winter hiking patch, complete all three between December 20 and March 20. There is a separate canine registration for dogs who finish the Triad.
Check the weather and trail reports before leaving. Carry warm layers, food, water, and navigation you can use without cell service. Snowshoes or traction may be appropriate depending on conditions. If your dog joins you, plan for your dog's paws, warmth, and energy too.
The patch is a lovely little reminder. But the best part for me was sharing those snowy miles together.
