Race With Purpose: The Ultimate Hawaiian Trail Run

Heading to Hawaii at the Alaska Airlines departures curb

Some races measure your pace. This one measures purpose.

In September 2018 I flew to Kauai to run the Ultimate Hawaiian Trail Run.

Alaska Airlines sponsored my travel to Kauai. Their crew made the journey feel easy, and I was excited to arrive for a race that gives so much back to the island.

Why this race exists

Kauai looks like paradise.

It also carries a serious problem. Drug and alcohol addiction touches many families on the island, and young people feel it first.

The Keala Foundation exists to change that. It runs free fitness and mentorship programs for kids across Kauai.

Coaches. Classes. A place to belong. All free, so no kid is turned away.

The trail run is the foundation's biggest fundraiser of the year. Every dollar supports those programs.

Welcome aboard the Alaska Airlines flight

That is what made the start line feel bigger than a race. Each entry helps keep these programs open to local kids. You can read more about the mission from the organizers.

The run itself

This is not a road race in trail shoes.

The courses wind through jungle on private land, with mud, steep hills, and long sections where the next bend is a surprise.

You can race a 5K, a 5K team event, or a 10K.

Kids run for free. Locals and visitors line up together.

Expect to get dirty. Expect to laugh. Expect people cheering for strangers at every turn.

Getting there

Alaska Airlines flies into Lihue, on Kauai's east side.

I want to give the service a real shout out. The flights were smooth, the crews were genuinely helpful, and the whole journey felt easy. After that kind of travel day, you show up rested instead of wrecked.

First look at Kauai from the plane

The race grounds sit on the south side of the island, an easy drive from the airport.

Book flights early. Island races fill up, and the good fares go with them.

What I took away

A race can fund more than a medal.

The best events give the community something that lasts after the finish line is packed up.

If you travel for races, look for the ones that give back where they run. It changes how the whole weekend feels.

If you want to help

Run in a future edition. Race details live on the official site.

You can also support the Keala Foundation directly.

And if running on Kauai is not in your plans, telling someone about the foundation is another way to support the work.
