A Mountain Bike Day Near Salt Lake City with Specialized

Salt Lake City makes it easy to look at the hills and want to ride right away. In the fall of 2021, I got to do more than look. Specialized invited me out for a tour of their distribution center and a day of testing on the trails above town, and I came home full of new respect for both.
First, the tour
The distribution center is where bikes go from factory boxes to trail ready. Racks of frames move through the building. Wheels get trued. Brakes get bled. Headsets get torqued to spec. Every step has a station, and every station has people who care about the small stuff.
Watching that process changed how I think about a bike. When a new one arrives at your door already dialed, that is not luck. It is a long chain of quiet checks, done by hand.
Then, the Epic EVO
The test bike for the afternoon was the Epic EVO. It is the full suspension sibling of their cross country race bike, and it suits exactly the kind of day I had. Long climbs. Rocky descents. Terrain that keeps changing its mind.
I rolled out into the foothills with the team recommendations in mind and let the bike set the pace. The suspension stays firm when you stand and climb, then opens up when the ground drops away. Over roots and loose rock it felt planted in a way that made me want more speed than my legs were ready for.
If you are newer to riding bikes like this, a tip that helped me: start climbs seated, keep your weight on the pedals, and let the suspension do its job. The bike handles more than you expect. Save your energy for the descent.
Pick a trail for today's conditions
The foothills have exposed sections where weather changes quickly. Before heading out, check the forecast and look for current trail notices through Salt Lake City Public Lands or Trails Utah. A route that rode well last week may need time to dry after rain or snow.
Look at the dirt before committing. If your tires leave deep tracks or the tread sticks to your shoes, turn around and choose a drier option. That small decision keeps a trail from becoming a repair job for volunteers.
Ride for the people around you
On shared trails, slow down early when you see someone ahead. Give people on foot room to pass, and yield to horses. Call out politely rather than arriving at speed. IMBA's Rules of the Trail are a useful refresher before a new riding area.
Keep to the existing line. Cutting a switchback or skirting a puddle widens the tread and makes the next wet day harder on the trail. Pack out what you bring in, including wrappers and a spare tube if you use one. Leave No Trace has a good overview if you want the full picture.
One day, well spent
We wrapped the afternoon with dusty legs and empty water bottles. Big thanks to Specialized for the tour, the trail time, and a genuinely fun bike to test. If you are ever passing through Salt Lake City with a free morning, the foothills will not disappoint.
