The First Cold Day: Testing the Icebreaker Merino 260 Oasis
The first properly cold day in NYC always gets my attention. Suddenly, the layer I reach for before heading outside matters a little more.
This time, it was the Icebreaker Merino 260 Oasis. I wore it out in the cold, and it kept me warm. A good start for a layer that will be getting plenty more time outside.
The reel above captures that first cold morning. This is the beginning of the story, not a verdict after a whole winter.
What makes the 260 Oasis a cold-weather layer
The draw is the merino wool. The 260 Oasis uses a warmer, midweight merino fabric designed for cold-weather base layering. The 260 refers to the fabric weight category, not a temperature rating or a promise about how cold you can go.
Merino is naturally odour resistant and helps manage moisture and temperature. Those are useful qualities in a layer worn close to your skin, especially when your day includes both moving around and standing still.
That does not make it a windproof jacket or a rain shell. I think of it as the foundation of an outfit, with the outer layers changing to match the weather.
You can explore the range and the details of each style on Icebreaker's website.
The first outing
For this first cold day, the question was simple: would it keep me warm?
It did. That is the part I can speak to from actually wearing it, rather than from a product description.
There is something lovely about finding a layer that makes heading outside feel a little easier when the temperature drops. I am happy with that first impression. I am also leaving room for the longer test, because one cold day cannot tell me everything about a piece of gear.
How I will keep testing it
Through the fall, I will keep wearing the Oasis and pay attention to how it works with lighter outer layers. I want to see how the warmth feels as my activity changes, and how comfortably it fits under the pieces I already reach for.
As we move into winter, the focus will shift to layering. I will try it beneath warmer midlayers and a weather-appropriate outer layer, adjusting the combination rather than expecting one top to do every job.
I will also be watching how it feels after repeated wear and washing according to the care label. Warmth on the first outing is encouraging. Comfort, usefulness and how it holds up over time are what will tell me whether it earns a regular place in the rotation.
For now, the first cold day gave me a warm start. I am looking forward to seeing where this layer fits as fall turns into winter.
